Dub

Dub is an investigation into the effects of sensory intermodulation and perceptual dissonance. Working with a phenomenon known as the McGurk effect, the artist creates a situation where visual information modulates auditory perception. One-second-long video and sound recordings play of the artist pronouncing phonemes; what appears to be said in the video, however, is paired with a different vocal sound. The perceived result is a new phoneme that exists psychologically, but not acoustically. Using Max/MSP and Max/Jitter, each combination of phonemes is sequenced to play just video, just sound, both, and neither. By presenting each variable, the experience of this piece becomes a cognitive process rather than an illusion.
