Space is Between Spaces

A recording of the artist's voice saying the phrase, "spaces between", loops in both speakers. When the grate in front of the eyes is centred , the left and right audio channels play synchronously; as the subject slides the grate to the side, the recording becomes delayed in either the left or right speaker. The this delay can create the perception of reverberation or echo, producing a synthetic feeling of space. By sliding the grate, the subject closes off the frontal apertures and forfeits their sense of visual space, opening a heightened sense of auditory space instead. Space is Between Spaces is inspired by Steve Reich's phase shifting techniques in Come Out and It's Gonna Rain.
